LEARN MORE ABOUT DIETHANOLAMINE 1080 720 DESA Q

Diethanolamine is a surfactant, emulsifier, moisturizing and solubilizing organic chemical compound, which is commonly used in solvents, emulsifiers and detergent applications. It can be classified as both a secondary amine and a dialcohol.
The use of this compound should be carried out with great caution. Its combustion can produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide. It is incompatible with:
  • Strong acids
  • Oxidizing agents
  • Halogenated compounds
  • Nitrogenous agents
It is advisable not to expose it neither to sunlight, nor to the sun or to temperatures higher than 138°C.
Diethanolamine is a variant of ethanolamine, which when subjected to temperatures higher than those of the environment, is easily miscible in water. It appears as a clear liquid with a viscous consistency and is hygroscopic.
Chemical formula: C4H11NO2

Obtainment
Diethanolamine is obtained by the reaction of ethylene oxide with ammonia, under high temperature and pressure conditions.
Application
DEA is used as a surfactant and as a corrosion inhibitor. It is used to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural gas.

In oil refineries, DEA in water solutions is commonly used to remove hydrogen sulfide from various process gases.

DEA is a chemical feed used in the production of morpholine.

Handling and storage
Advice on safe handling: Do not breathe vapors/dust. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. See section 8 for personal protective equipment. Smoking, eating and drinking must be prohibited in the area of application. To avoid spills during handling, keep the bottle on a metal tray. Dispose of rinse water in accordance with national and local regulations.
Hygiene measures: Do not eat or drink during use. Do not smoke during use. Wash hands before breaks and after the end of the working day.

Conditions for safe storage: Keep container tightly closed in a dry, well-ventilated place. Open containers must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Store in properly labeled containers.

Uses and applications of diethanolamine
Diethanolamine can be used for various uses and applications, such as:
  • In solvents.
  • For the manufacture of raw materials for detergents, cement additives, pesticides, and drilling and cutting oils.
  • As a catalyst for polyurethanes.
  • As an absorbent for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in chemical processes (amine wash).
  • Manufacturing of pharmaceuticals or household products.
  • As a moisturizer.
  • In cosmetics.
  • As a pH stabilizer.
Diethanolamine has the following characteristics:
  • It has a viscous consistency.
  • It is highly toxic.
It is a flammable liquid.
  • It is a colorless product.
  • It has an odor similar to that of ammonia.
  • It has corrosive properties.
